Parent/Professional Workshops & Training
Regular Workshops Open to Non-Eagle House Parents/Professionals

We provide regular workshops for our parents/carers during the school year and are always open to new ideas for topics and speakers. We are fortunate in being able to draw upon the clinical expertise of our in house multidisciplinary team and extended team from Eagle House Group, on a variety of subjects relating to autism.
Exciting Workshops still to come include:
- Thursday 15th July 2010- Helping your child to read - Jolly Phonics
Jolly Phonics is a fun reading and writing programme. It teaches the letter sounds in an enjoyable, multisensory way, and enables children to use them to read and write words. In this beginner’s session, we will teach the letter sounds and actions enabling parents to use this approach at home with their children. - Thursday 23rd September 2010 - Intensive Interaction
Learning how to play and make friends is one of the most important life skills a person can learn, however for many children with Autism this is one of the most difficult challanges they will face. This workshop will explore how we can adjust our interaction skills when playing with children on the Autistic Spectrum and the benefit that has on developing their play and social skills. - Thursday 21st October 2010 - Sensory Processing
We as a school understand that our students may have difficulty processing all the different sensory input coming into their body (i.e. sounds, smells, touch, colours or light). Therefore, our students may become over or under aroused with certain sensory input/experiences leading to possible strees, confusion and anxiety. This workshop will provide you with general information regarding sensory processing and how it may affect individuals with autism. - Thursday 25th November 2010 - Assessments, in and around Eagle House School
Thorough regular assessments form an essential and integral part of the work that we do at Eagle House School (Mitcham) to enable us to provide appropriate curriculums and interventions for the pupils and to measure progress. This workshop will take you through some of the assessment processes and tools that we use to assess a child’s abilities, needs and progress in all areas of their development e.g communication, sensory, gross and fine motor, social interaction, independence, behaviour and learning.
Coming Soon -
Fine Motor Skills
Fine Motor Skills are skills that involve a refined use of the small muscles controlling the hand, fingers and thumb. The development of these skills enables tasks such as writing, drawing and buttoning up clothes. This workshop will provide you with general information regarding fine motor skills and how an Occupational Therapist would address difficulties in this area within an educational setting.
We also hope to do another 'Eating Issues' Workshop.
Each workshop will be in the school training room starting at 10am with a cup of tea or coffee and a chance to chat to other parents/professionals. The main workshop starts at 10.30 until 11.30.
There will be an opportunity at the end for specific questions related to the mornings topic, as well as the chance to speak to staff and other parents before finishing.
May we extend our thanks to the parents who made these suggestions. If you have ideas for future workshops please do not hesitate to give Alison, School Administrator, a call on 020 8687 7050.
Here are the workshops we have already held:
- Social Stories / Comic Strip Conversations
Social Stories (Carol Gray, 1991) are a visual method of sharing social information in an easy to understand format. A Social Story is a short description of a particular situation, event or activity, which includes specific information about what to expect in that situation and why.
Comic Strip Conversations (Carol Gray, 1994) are another more complex technique developed to assist individuals with ASD to develop greater social understanding. Comic Strip Conversations provide visual represenations of the different levels of communication that takes place in a conversation, using symbols, stick figure drawings and colour. This workshop aims to give an overview of both Social Stories and Comic Strip Conversations, and give you a chance to practice creating and using them within a group. It will give you a tool to begin thinking about the perceptions of our young people with autism when faced with a social situation, and a means to help you explain them. - Multidisciplinary Workshop (who we are and what we do)
This presentation will introduce you to the multidisciplinary team (MDT) at Eagle House School Mitcham: Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Psychology and Music Therapy, as well as Education. Please come along if you would like to find out more about the roles that we have and how we work together as a team at school. We will also be looking at our referral system and the levels of intervention we provide here at Eagle House School. - Music Therapy Practical Workshop
Music Therapy is about using musical techniques to achieve personal goals, work through emotional issues, develop communication and resolve problems. Music is a Creative-Expressive tool and can be used within a group or on a 1- 1 basis depending on childrens' needs. The presentation will include examples of music therapy successes, and ideas for creative music making at home. - The 5P Approach
Children and young people with autistic spectrum disorders present many challenges to the people who care for them. 'Difficult' or challenging behaviour is often encountered on a daily basis, and it is easy for both parents and professionals to feel completely overwhelmed by its sheer range and complexity. Where do you start? What happens when, in managing one set of problems, another gets worse? Is there some way to tackle difficulties before they get out of hand, or even before they arise? The answer can be found in The 5p Approach. This talk will answer these questions and provide practical solutions that really work. It will offer a complete framework for behaviour intervention which has its roots in prevention and good practice, with an emphasis on promoting and encouraging the development of skills and independence, through Profiling, Prioritizing, Problem analysis, Problem solving and Planning.
We are always open to new ideas for topics and speakers
