What distinguishes us from many other schools for children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders is that we aim to be much more than just a school. Our provision includes our own dedicated multi disciplinary team of in-house clinical support. This includes our two resident psychologists, two speech and language therapists, an occupational therapist and a music therapist. This makes us a unique multi-professional educational resource for children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders. We regard ourselves as remarkably well placed to meet and develop our children's global needs, not just their education.
At Eagle House School we aim to integrate speech and language therapy into the classroom and work towards enabling our children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders to access learning opportunities. Communication is fundamental to learning and we therefore collaborate with the class teachers to ensure communication is functional within the classroom. We select activities that will engage, motivate and focus the children's attention; a necessary skill for learning. We then work in partnership with the teacher to progress each child's communicative skills. Our resident speech and language therapists work with each class to develop our students communication and attention abilities.
Occupational therapy is concerned with a childs ability to function in their everyday life activities (e.g., self-care, school work, play, social interaction and independence). Our Occupational Therapist will assess each child in terms of age-appropriate life tasks and focus on areas that interfere with their ability to function in such life tasks,
At Eagle House School we assess their motor and sensory abilities and how these are impacting on the child's functional abilities. We aim to
The Psychologists at Eagle House School are committed to a positive and pro-active approach. Working as part of the schools multi disciplinary team, they have a key role to play in understanding the individual childs strengths and areas of difficulty. Challenging and restrictive behaviours are carefully observed and monitored in order that the purpose of the underlying difficulty can be understood. Using the Functional Analysis framework, they aim to understand why the child may be displaying a particular behaviour and then design a behaviour management plan to address these issues; always taking onto account the childs developmental level and their likes/dislikes and interests. The emphasis is to support the child/young persons ability to access social and learning opportunities. Additionally the team provides training and support to other staff members and families alike.
Music therapy is grounded in the belief that everyone can respond to music. By improvising and creating music together, a relationship is built as the therapist helps the child to engage in active participation, specifically to meet the needs and capabilities of the individual child. Our Music therapist provides opportunities for our students to enjoy creating music in an interactive and fun way.
